Why It Works
This Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry is a weeknight lifesaver—ready in under 30 minutes and packed with bold, savory-sweet flavor. Tender beef, crisp broccoli, and a garlic-ginger sauce make it taste just like takeout, but fresher, healthier, and completely homemade.
Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 pound beef (sirloin, flank, skirt, or tri-tip), thinly sliced against the grain
- 4 cups broccoli florets (fresh or frozen)
- 3 teaspoons vegetable oil, divided
- Steamed rice or noodles, for serving
Instructions
- Marinate the Beef: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, garlic, and ginger. Place the beef in a zip-top bag or bowl and pour in half the sauce. Marinate 20 minutes at room temperature or overnight in the fridge.
- Prepare the Sauce: Whisk cornstarch with water and add to the remaining sauce mixture; set aside.
- Cook the Beef: Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Cook beef for about 4 minutes, until browned. Remove and set aside.
- Cook the Broccoli: Add remaining 1 teaspoon oil to the pan. Cook broccoli for 2 minutes, just until crisp-tender.
- Combine: Return beef to the pan. Make a well in the center and pour in the sauce. Cook 2 minutes, stirring, until the sauce thickens and everything is heated through.
- Serve: Spoon over steamed rice or noodles and enjoy immediately.
Getting Kids Involved
- Let kids whisk together the sauce ingredients.
- They can help count and add broccoli florets to the pan (with supervision).
- Older kids can assist with mixing the beef in the marinade.
Pro Tips, Meal Prep, and Time Savers
- Slice Against the Grain: Keeps beef tender and juicy.
- High Heat: A hot pan ensures a good sear and prevents steaming.
- Crisp-Tender Broccoli: Don’t overcook—aim for bright green and slightly firm.
- Make Ahead: Slice beef and prep sauce in advance to save time on busy nights.
- Protein & Veggie Swaps: Chicken, shrimp, tofu, or extra vegetables like bell peppers and snap peas work beautifully.
This stir fry is quick, flavorful, and versatile—perfect for fast weeknight dinners or crowd-pleasing meals.

Ingredients
-
Soy Sauce: The savory, umami-rich base of the sauce.
-
Sesame Oil: Just a touch adds deep, nutty flavor—toast it if you can.
-
Honey: Balances the saltiness of the soy sauce with subtle sweetness.
-
Garlic & Ginger: Fresh is best here for maximum flavor.
-
Cornstarch & Water: Helps thicken the sauce so it coats everything beautifully.
-
Beef: Sirloin is my favorite, but tri-tip, flank, or skirt steak all work well.
-
Broccoli: Fresh or frozen florets both work—use what you have.
-
Vegetable Oil: Ideal for high-heat cooking and getting a good sear.
Instructions
Step 1: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, garlic, and ginger.
Step 2: Place the beef in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and pour in half of the sauce mixture. Toss to coat and marinate for 20 minutes at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator.
Step 3: Whisk the cornstarch and water together, then add it to the remaining sauce mixture. Set aside.
Step 4: Heat a wok or large sauté pan over high heat. Add 2 teaspoons of oil and cook the beef for about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove beef to a clean bowl.
Step 5: Add the remaining 1 teaspoon of oil to the pan and cook the broccoli for 2 minutes, just until crisp-tender.
Step 6: Return the beef to the pan. Make a well in the center and pour in the sauce. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring, until the sauce thickens and everything is heated through.
Step 7: Serve immediately over brown rice.
Notes
-
Cut Against the Grain: This keeps the beef tender and easy to chew.
-
Don’t Overcook the Broccoli: Crisp-tender broccoli gives the best texture.
-
Use a Hot Pan: A properly heated pan ensures a great sear instead of steaming.
-
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a sauté pan or microwave.
