Juicy chicken burgers mixed with barbecue sauce and savory seasonings, topped with melted cheese for an easy family-friendly meal.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 burgers

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons oil, divided

  • ½ onion, finely diced

  • 1 pound ground chicken breast

  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce, plus more for serving

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

  • 4 slices Monterey Jack or mozzarella cheese

  • 4 burger buns

Instructions

  1. Cook the onions. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and ½ teaspoon of salt. Sauté for about 4 minutes, until tender. Set aside to cool.

  2. Mix the patties. In a mixing bowl, combine the cooled onions, ground chicken, barbecue sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, and remaining salt. Mix gently until just combined.

  3. Shape the burgers. Divide the mixture into 4 portions for regular burgers or 8 portions for sliders. Shape each portion into a patty.

  4. Cook the patties. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in the pan over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or 3–4 minutes per side for sliders, adjusting the time as needed until cooked through. Ground chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F.

  5. Add the cheese. Place a slice of cheese on each full-size patty during the final minute of cooking. Cover the pan briefly to help the cheese melt.

  6. Assemble and serve. Place the patties on burger buns and add extra barbecue sauce and your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix: Gently combine the ingredients to help keep the burgers tender.

  • Cool the onions first: Adding hot onions directly to the ground chicken can make the mixture harder to handle.

  • Choose your barbecue sauce: A smoky, tangy sauce balances the chicken’s mild flavor. Avoid very syrupy sauces if you prefer a less sweet burger.

  • Check the temperature: Ground chicken can look cooked before it reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F. Use a food thermometer for accuracy.
