Hot Cocoa in a Jar is one of the sweetest (and simplest!) homemade gifts you can give during the holiday season. Layered with rich cocoa powder, sugar, chocolate chips, and a festive cinnamon stick, this cozy treat is as beautiful to look at as it is delicious to sip.

Whether you’re gifting teachers, neighbors, coworkers, or friends, this thoughtful DIY idea spreads warmth and holiday cheer in the most chocolatey way.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 (16-ounce) mason jar with lid
  • Holiday ribbon
  • Gift tag

Instructions

Step 1:
Using a funnel (or parchment paper shaped into a funnel), carefully layer the cocoa powder, sugar, and chocolate chips into the mason jar. Top with a cinnamon stick for a festive finishing touch.

Step 2:
Secure the lid tightly. Tie a holiday ribbon around the rim of the jar and attach a gift tag.

Notes

  • This recipe makes approximately 8 cups of hot cocoa.
  • For smaller gifts, you can halve or quarter the recipe and use smaller jars.
  • For clean, even layers, pour slowly and gently tap the jar on the counter between layers.
  • Store sealed jars in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.
  • Optional add-ins: mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint, or white chocolate chips for a fun twist.
