Food People, Parent Picks: we ask our favorite chefs, food writers, and industry insiders who we interview in our Order Up! Series to share the products, books, and bites they can’t live without.

Earlier this week we sat down with Michelle Schor, co-founder of Hundy!, to interview her for our Order Up! series. We talked about growing up food-obsessed in Canada, building a fruit pop made from one ingredient, and pitching Shark Tank two weeks after giving birth. You can revisit her interview right here.
Now the practical half. From the three staples she always keeps on hand to the Austin brands she roots for and the snacks that survive a car ride with a toddler, here’s what actually earns a spot in Michelle’s kitchen.

Current favorite Hundy! flavor in your house?
That’s tough. Right now it’s the Berry. Our tropicals are the most popular, but Berry feels like you grabbed a handful off the farm and put it straight in your mouth. It gets a little messier than the others, but cold and fresh it’s exactly right.
Three pantry or freezer staples you always have on hand?
Garlic salt, first. It makes almost any meal taste better. Olive oil, because it’s a basic you have to have. And a sauce ready to go for whatever we’re making that week, since we grocery shop every weekend and plan our meals ahead.
In the freezer it’s fruit, smoothie ingredients, and Hundy!. We don’t keep much frozen otherwise. Zoey’s been downing Hundy!’s since she was six months old. She had a friend over recently and the two of them scarfed down two each.

Favorite kitchen tool?
Good knives, honestly. And then something random: the little rings you crack an egg into so it cooks in a perfect circle. [It’s an egg poacher!] I love an over-easy egg round. I also love plating. I’m not running a Michelin kitchen, but making a plate look good is a creative outlet for me during the day.
Current favorite easy weeknight dinner?
We think in bowls. A protein bowl or a pasta bowl, sometimes Mexican, sometimes Italian, so rice with veggies and chicken, or protein pasta with salmon and a light olive oil sauce. We keep it lower on the heavy carbs. Last night was salmon with sweet potato and broccolini.

Besides Hundy!, a grab-and-go snack for your bag, car, or stroller?
Popcorn, like Lesser Evil. Healthy snack bars in the pantry. Yogurt with granola on the side, usually Purely Elizabeth, or the Good Culture cottage cheese cups. We keep cooler bags everywhere, including the car, so we just grab and go. For Zoey it’s pouches, applesauce or smoothie. Anything in a pouch keeps the car clean, even when she throws it.
A cookbook or recipe source you turn to?
Mostly we photograph dishes we like at restaurants and recreate them at home, since a lot of menus tell you what’s in the dish. I’ll make my grandma’s soups, Aviv makes his mom’s recipes, and a lot of the time we don’t follow a recipe at all. We open the fridge and go.

Austin is a CPG capital. A few local brands people should know?
Perk, for their electrolytes and protein that isn’t chalky. Whims, for what they’re doing with chocolate and sugar. Love & Cookies for really clean cookies [One Potato interviewed their founder Ashley, and she’s one of a kind ❤️]. And Better Sour, candy that’s better for you and actually tastes like candy, for the moms with a stash in the night table.

A postpartum comfort food, or something you’d send to a new mom.
It was so hot in Austin that summer, so honestly my answer is electrolyte packets. I find water boring, and I’m not a big kombucha or soda person anymore, so electrolytes were how I stayed hydrated for feeding. Beyond that I leaned into salads and lighter things that gave me energy. In winter it would’ve been soups, but in that heat I just needed to stay hydrated.
