Ingredients
- 3 large eggs
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
- 8 slices bread, such as cinnamon raisin, challah, pain perdu, or another favorite sturdy bread
Instructions
- Preheat and lightly grease a waffle iron.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, salt, and cinnamon.
- Dip each side of the bread into the egg mixture, making sure it is well coated without becoming overly soaked.
- Place the coated bread in the waffle iron and cook for about 5 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- Serve warm with favorite toppings.
Notes
- Choose sturdy bread: Challah, cinnamon raisin bread, and other thick-cut breads hold up especially well.
- Don’t oversoak: A quick dip on each side is enough to coat the bread without making it soggy.
- Keep it warm: Place cooked pieces on a wire rack in a low oven while finishing the rest of the batch.
- Try different flavors: Add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of nutmeg to the egg mixture for another easy variation.
