Deep Dish Cast Iron Pizza

Deep Dish Cast Iron Pizza gives you that crispy, golden crust with a soft, doughy center and plenty of melty cheese. Baking the pizza in a cast iron skillet helps the edges brown beautifully while keeping the middle thick and satisfying. It's also a great family dinner because everyone can choose their own toppings.

The “Crispy & Doughy” Deep Dish Cast Iron Pizza

When you’re tasked with reinventing pizza night for a healthy, “customizable” family dinner, sometimes the best solution is to ditch the standard delivery box entirely. This Deep Dish Cast Iron Pizza uses simple dough, classic sauce, and a cast iron skillet to create a Chicago-style pie right at home. It’s a “wholesome” twist that had the in-house testers absolutely thrilled—to the point where one could barely hear a muffled “pass another slice” through bites of crispy, cheesy goodness!

Why This Recipe Wins

  • Cast Iron Power: By incorporating a 6″ to 9″ cast iron skillet directly into the baking process, the dish provides a “filling and tasty” boost with a crust that is doughy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
  • Friday Night Surprise: Moving away from a “standard tedious routine” of ordering thin crust takeout makes weekly pizza night feel like a “special holiday” feast.
  • Naturally Non-Toxic: Using a cast iron skillet provides a “rich yet robust” bake while offering a safe, non-toxic alternative to traditional nonstick pans.
  • Customizable Ease: These “family-friendly portions” allow you to build vegetarian, dairy-free, or meat-lovers pies, making them an ideal choice for keeping everyone at the table satisfied.

What You’ll Need

  • The Doughy Base: Homemade or high-quality store-bought pizza dough to form that signature thick crust.
  • The Classic Sauce: Your favorite rich pizza sauce to coat the deep dish layers.
  • The Cheesy Core: Plenty of cheese (or dairy-free alternatives) to create the ultimate gooey melt.
  • The Endless Toppings: Any veggies, meats, or extras your family loves to customize their perfect pie.

How to Make It

  • The Skillet Prep: Press the pizza dough firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a greased 6″ to 9″ cast iron skillet so it is primed to get “perfectly crisp” on the outside.
  • The Sauce Layer: Spread a generous layer of pizza sauce over the dough, coating it “thoroughly, but gently.”
  • The Cheese Melt: Sprinkle cheese generously over the sauce until it looks ready to melt into a beautifully “velvety smooth” finish.
  • The Custom Top: Add your family’s favorite toppings and bake in a hot oven until the crust is doughy inside and a gorgeous “golden-brown” on the outside.
  • The Plate: Slice it thick directly from the skillet and serve warm for a cheesy, “mess-proof” masterpiece!

Get the Kids Involved: The “Deep Dish Crew”

Since building custom pizzas is incredibly interactive, this is a “ton of fun” for kids to help assemble and enjoy.

  • Ages 3–5: Let them be the “Topping Droppers.” They can help scatter their favorite veggies or cheese onto the dough, practicing their “precision.”
  • Ages 6–9: Have them help as “The Sauce Spooners.” Show them how spreading the red sauce creates a “scrumptious” and colorful canvas.
  • Ages 10+: Let them lead the “Dough Pressing.” Under supervision, they can push the dough up the sides of the cast iron skillet and look for the “magic thickness” that ensures a perfect deep dish shape.

Tips for Success

  • Skillet Size is Crucial: If you use a pan that’s too large, the crust will get too thin. Using a 6″ to 9″ cast iron skillet is imperative to achieve that “tender and rich” doughy center surrounded by a crisp edge.
  • Dough Prep Matters: The goal is a stress-free dinner, so keeping store-bought dough on hand ensures pizza night stays “refreshing and light” without hours of prep.
  • The Impromptu Trick: One can make a “huge batch” of homemade pizza dough once a week and keep it in the fridge.

Pizza Night Note: Give everyone at the table a say in what goes on their pie! It makes throwing together an impromptu Friday night dinner a “quick and easy” win-win that leaves the whole family satisfied.

  • Variation: For a “decadent and indulgent” twist, stuff the outer edges of the dough with mozzarella string cheese before baking to create a stuffed-crust experience that elevates the flavor profile even further.

Serve & Savor

The Deep Dish Cast Iron Pizza is a “tantalizing taste sensation” that proves homemade pizza nights can be “out of this world” delicious. It’s a “versatile” recipe that turns simple dough and a cast iron pan into a “memory-making” family tradition.

Deep Dish Cast Iron Pizza gives you that crispy, golden crust with a soft, doughy center and plenty of melty cheese. Baking the pizza in a cast iron skillet helps the edges brown beautifully while keeping the middle thick and satisfying.

It’s also a great family dinner because everyone can choose their own toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pizza dough, at room temperature
  • All-purpose flour, for the work surface
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Toppings of Choice

  • Pepperoni
  • Olives
  • Bell peppers
  • Onions
  • Pineapple
  • Ham
  • Mushrooms
  • Broccoli

Instructions

  1. Remove the pizza dough from the refrigerator several hours before baking so it can come to room temperature.
  2. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  3. Lightly flour your work surface. Divide the dough in half and roll or stretch each piece into an even circle.
  4. Let the dough rest for a few minutes, then roll it again until each circle is about 1 inch larger than the cast iron skillet.
  5. Grease the cast iron skillets with butter or olive oil.
  6. Place the dough into the skillets, gently pressing it into the bottom and up the sides.
  7. Spread half of the marinara sauce over each crust.
  8. Sprinkle with mozzarella and add your favorite toppings.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Let the pizzas cool for a few minutes before slicing with a pizza cutter or sharp knife.

Notes

  • Bring the dough to room temperature: This makes it much easier to stretch without fighting the dough.
  • Give the dough a rest: If it keeps shrinking while you roll it, let it rest for a few more minutes before trying again.
  • Don’t overload the pizza: Too many toppings can make the center soggy and prevent the crust from cooking evenly.
  • Watch the skillet handle: Cast iron gets extremely hot in the oven. Always use a thick oven mitt or potholder when handling the skillet.
