Double Berry Smoothie

This Double Berry Smoothie is bright, refreshing, and naturally tart, combining strawberries and raspberries for a nutrient-packed start to your day. Ready in just five minutes, it’s an easy, protein-rich smoothie perfect for breakfast, post-workout recovery, or an afternoon energy boost.

Refreshingly Tart, Creamy, and 5-Minute Fast

This Double Berry Smoothie was inspired by my daughter Gemma’s obsession with snacking on frozen raspberries straight from the bag! It’s refreshingly tart, vibrant, and packed with fiber and vitamins. By letting Gemma take the lead in the kitchen, we created a blend that is simple enough for a busy morning but delicious enough to be declared a “new favorite.” It’s a perfect example of how a little autonomy in the kitchen goes a long way.

What You’ll Need

  • Frozen Raspberries: The star of the show, providing a tart flavor and a huge fiber boost.
  • Frozen Strawberries: For extra berry goodness and natural sweetness.
  • 1/2 Banana: Just enough to add a creamy texture without overpowering the berries.
  • Milk of Choice: Dairy, almond, or oat milk to help it all blend together.
  • Super Boosts: A scoop of vanilla protein powder and collagen peptides for staying power.

How to Make It

  1. Load the Blender: Toss your frozen raspberries, strawberries, and half-banana into the blender.
  2. Add Your Boosters: Scoop in your protein powder and collagen.
  3. Pour and Whiz: Add your milk and blend on high for about 60 seconds until perfectly smooth and creamy.
  4. Taste and Serve: Pour into a glass and enjoy that bright, berry-filled goodness immediately!

Get the Kids Involved: The Power of Autonomy

If you have a tough time getting your kids to try new things, let them be the “Smoothie Architect” like Gemma was for this recipe.

  • Ages 3–5: Let them help “dump” the frozen berries into the blender. Frozen raspberries are fun to touch (and taste!) as they go in.
  • Ages 6–9: Have them help measure the protein powder or count out the strawberries.
  • Ages 10+: Let them decide the “berry ratio”—do they want it more tart (more raspberries) or more sweet (more strawberries)?

Make It Weeknight-Friendly

  • Shortcut Option: Keep a “Double Berry” mix pre-portioned in a freezer bag so you can just dump, add liquid, and blend in under 2 minutes.
  • The Creaminess Secret: Using frozen berries instead of fresh ones ensures the smoothie stays thick and cold without the need for ice, which can water down the flavor.
  • Make-Ahead: You can blend this the night before and store it in a thermos. Give it a quick shake in the morning, and it’s ready for the school commute.
  • Upgrade Move: If you want it even sweeter without adding sugar, add a tiny splash of orange juice. The citrus notes make the berry flavors pop!

Serve & Savor

Smoothies are the ultimate “blank canvas” for health. Whether it’s this tart berry blend or a classic Chocolate Almond Butter version, there’s a smoothie for every tastebud under the sun. This one is proof that when kids help create the menu, they’re much more excited to drink every last drop.

Notes

Smoothie Tips

  • Using frozen berries eliminates the need for ice and keeps the smoothie thick and creamy.

  • If your blender struggles, blend liquids and banana first before adding frozen fruit.

Protein Boost

  • Protein powder and collagen peptides help support muscle recovery, skin health, and satiety, making this smoothie more filling.

Flavor Variations

  • Add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter smoothie.

  • Substitute almond, oat, or coconut milk for different flavor profiles.

Make Ahead

  • Prep smoothie packs by portioning fruit and dry ingredients into freezer bags. When ready, just add milk and blend.
