These Pizza Balls pack all the fun flavors of pizza into soft, golden dough bites filled with gooey mozzarella, pizza sauce, and broccoli. They're easy to customize with your family's favorite toppings and make a fun weeknight dinner, lunchbox addition, or snack for sharing. Serve them warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping!

The “Gooey & Fun” Pizza Balls

When you’re tasked with whipping up an easy weeknight meal for a healthy, “pizza-loving” family, sometimes the best solution is to switch up your Friday movie night tradition. These Pizza Balls use pizza dough, gooey melted cheese, and customizable fillings to create a pull-apart treat right at home. It’s a “wholesome” twist that had the in-house testers absolutely thrilled—to the point where one could barely hear a muffled “pass another pizza ball” through bites of gooey, savory goodness!

Why This Recipe Wins

  • Fun & Customizable: By incorporating cheese and endless custom toppings directly inside the dough, the dish provides a “filling and tasty” meal that is perfect for little hands to hold.
  • Pizza Night Surprise: Moving away from a “standard tedious routine” of ordering regular slices turns your Friday movie night into a “special holiday” event where kids get to be the guide.
  • Naturally Cheesy: Filling the centers with your favorite marinara, veggies, or ham and pineapple provides a “rich yet robust” flavor profile that reveals gooey melted cheese in every pull-apart bite.
  • Less Mess Ease: These “kid-approved portions” are smaller than a big slice, making them an ideal choice for a drip-free dinner that easily transitions into tomorrow’s lunchbox.

What You’ll Need

  • The Dough Base: Prepared pizza dough (store-bought works perfectly, but homemade Pizzeria Pizza Dough brings it to a whole other level!).
  • The Saucy Center: Marinara or pizza sauce (like a Veggie Heavy Pizza Sauce for extra hidden nutrients).
  • The Gooey Inside: Lots of shredded mozzarella or a variety of cheeses for that perfect melted pull-apart center.
  • The Fun Fillings: Whatever toppings you can think of—chopped vegetables, ham, pineapple, or pepperoni!

How to Make It

  • The Dough Prep: Portion your pizza dough out so the little spheres are primed to bake evenly and get “perfectly crisp” on the outside.
  • The Filling Stage: Add a dollop of sauce, cheese, and your chosen toppings into the center of each dough piece, mixing your filling combinations “thoroughly, but gently” so the inside becomes completely “velvety smooth” as it melts.
  • The Seal & Bake: Pinch the dough closed tightly into a ball and bake in a hot oven until the outside crust turns a gorgeous “golden-brown.”
  • The Plate: Let them cool just slightly so the cheese doesn’t drip everywhere, then serve for a fun, “mess-proof” masterpiece!

Get the Kids Involved: The “Pizza Squad”

Since dropping toppings and sealing dough is super interactive, this is a “ton of fun” for kids to help assemble and enjoy.

  • Ages 3–5: Let them be the “Topping Droppers.” They can help drop a pinch of cheese or veggies into the center of the dough, practicing their “precision.”
  • Ages 6–9: Have them help as “The Dough Rollers.” Show them how sealing the little spheres creates a “scrumptious” and hidden pocket of flavor.
  • Ages 10+: Let them lead the “Sauce Spreading.” Under supervision, they can portion the sauce into the dough and look for the “magic pull” as the piping hot cheese stretches at the dinner table.

Tips for Success

  • Sealing is Crucial: If you overstuff the balls or don’t pinch them tightly, they might burst open. Keeping the fillings balanced and well-sealed is imperative to achieve that “tender and rich” bite with the perfect dough-to-cheese ratio.
  • Veggie Balance Matters: The goal is a fun twist on pizza night, so packing them full of finely chopped vegetables ensures the meal stays “refreshing and light” for little tummies.
  • The Freezer Trick: One can make a “huge batch” of these unbaked balls on a sheet pan, freeze them, and move them to a ziplock bag to bake for 5 extra minutes whenever a craving kicks in!

Pizza Night Note: Let your kids be the guide in making the recipe their own! It makes customizing Friday dinners a “quick and easy” win that they might just love more than regular pizza itself.

  • Variation: For a “decadent and indulgent” twist, brush the tops of the baked dough balls with melted garlic butter and a sprinkle of parmesan right when they come out of the oven to elevate the flavor profile even further.

Serve & Savor

The Pizza Balls are a “tantalizing taste sensation” that proves switching up a classic can be “out of this world” delicious. It’s a “versatile” recipe that turns traditional pizza dough and toppings into a “memory-making” family favorite.

These Pizza Balls pack all the fun flavors of pizza into soft, golden dough bites filled with gooey mozzarella, pizza sauce, and broccoli. They’re easy to customize with your family’s favorite toppings and make a fun weeknight dinner, lunchbox addition, or snack for sharing. Serve them warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping!

Ingredients

Scale
  • Olive oil, for greasing and brushing

  • 1 pound white or whole wheat pizza dough

  • ¾ cup chopped broccoli florets

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • ½ cup pizza sauce

  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for topping

Optional fillings: Pepperoni, kale, spinach, ham, pineapple, bell peppers, olives, or mushrooms.

Instructions

1. Prepare the Oven and Pan

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate with olive oil.

2. Divide the Dough

Divide the pizza dough into 16 evenly sized pieces. Keeping the pieces similar in size helps the pizza balls bake evenly.

3. Mix the Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped broccoli, mozzarella, and pizza sauce. Stir until everything is evenly mixed.

4. Fill the Dough

Take one piece of dough and roll or flatten it into a circle about 3 inches wide. Place approximately 1 tablespoon of the filling in the center.

5. Shape the Pizza Balls

Bring the edges of the dough together over the filling and pinch them firmly to seal. Gently roll the dough between your hands to form a ball.

Place the ball seam-side down in the prepared pie plate. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling, arranging the balls close together.

6. Add the Topping

Brush the tops of the dough balls lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

7. Bake Until Golden

Bake for about 25 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through. If the tops brown too quickly, check them a little earlier.

8. Cool and Serve

Let the pizza balls cool for a few minutes before serving, as the cheese filling will be very hot. Serve with extra pizza sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Don’t overfill: About 1 tablespoon of filling per ball helps keep the dough easy to seal.

  • Seal the edges well: Pinch the dough together firmly so the cheese and sauce stay inside as the balls bake.

  • Keep the filling manageable: Chop broccoli and any other vegetables into small pieces so they fit easily inside the dough.

  • Avoid excess moisture: If using mushrooms, spinach, or other watery vegetables, cook them first and drain off excess liquid.

  • Leave a little space: Arrange the balls close together in the pie plate, but avoid squeezing them too tightly.

  • Check the centers: Dough thickness and oven performance can affect baking time, so make sure the dough is fully cooked before serving.
